My sister and I treasure this mini-series which was shown in Masterpiece Theater many years ago. Anyone who enjoys turn-of-the-century films such as The Age of Innocence, House of Mirth, The Golden Bowl, A Room With A Notion and Howard’s Slay or stories of the Astors and Vanderbilts will gain themselves enraptured with this yarn of 4 sparkling American women who accumulate themselves being courted by sons of the British nobility.

In the center of the legend are Nan (Carla Gugino) and Virginia St. George (Alison Eliott), and their friends Conchita Closson (Mira Sorvino) and Lizzy Elmsworth (Rya Kihlstedt) - four young women living in turn-of-the-century America, when social residence and wealth were the most notable considerations in a woman’s life (these were the days of the Astors and Vanderbilts, after all) . Early in the memoir we rep Conchita married to Lord Marable and begins her unusual life with the English nobility. Spurned in Newport and Recent York social circles because they are considered “current money,” Nan, Virginia and Lizzy go to England to visit Conchita and hopefully try their luck there. With the wait on of 2 enterprising older women, they soon become the toast of the town and are courted by many graceful, wealthy young men. Virginia and Lizzy vie for the attentions of Lord Seadown (Impress Tandy) who is not quite what he seems. Nan is pursued by the humble but ambitious Guy Thwaite (Greg Wise from “Sense and Sensibility”) and the wealthy and reserved Julius, the Duke of Trevenick (James Frain) .

The mini-series offers ravishing scenery and costumes, stout acting from members of the cast (including veterans Cherie Lunghi, Jenny Agutter, Michael Kitchen and Rosemary Leach) and a thoroughly spellbinding tale. I loved the wonderful mansions, palaces and castles in Newport and England alike and the astounding intertwining of the American and British sensibilities in the station. It has “one foot in America and another foot in England,” as Masterpiece Theater narrator Russell Baker aptly explains. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys suitable romance/drama!

This is a version of Edith Wharton’s last unfinished unique as completed by the BBC screenwriter Maggie Wadey. It was filmed barely 2 years after the first complete version of the current was published in 1993 (Completed by Marion Mainwaring) . It chronicles a very different time (1870s) when class distinctions were clearly marked and the nouveau riche found themselves curtly excluded from the “mature money” aristocracy of 19th century America. The memoir traces the lives of 4 girls from such families who finding themselves rejected in the land of their birth, fade to England to try their charms and unusual found wealth on the titled aristocracy of the venerable country. How they fare and the breaking of their illusions effect the meat of the anecdote. One reviewer commented on the shallowness and blandness of the characters, of not being able to verbalize the girls apart. Some viewers may even recognize at these girls as twittering airheads. This is in section Wharton’s doing. Edith Wharton was no admirer of the American upper class. She belonged to it, she experienced it first hand and she despised it and made it evident in her books. Wharton constantly pointed out her society’s ignorance, provincialism and prissy narrow-mindedness. None of the girls here really ends up living happily ever after. One of the reviewers here stated that in the absence of Wharton’s fill ending, the BBC screenwriter has let one of the girls off at the destroy. But I tend to disagree. Even the heroine Annabelle’s running away with the man she loves (supposedly a pleased ending) is tinged with the public scandal of adultery, the loss of her titles and privileges, and exile to the other side of the world (Durban, South Africa) . This is definitely not what any of the girls would have wanted. Everybody unbiased ends up making compromises and settling for second best. But then such is life.

As usual with the BBC, this is a exquisite production, with delicate costumes and sets, filmed at various locations in the English countryside as well as in Newport, Rhode Island which stands in for 19th century America.

The DVD transfer is a rather more questionable affair. According to IMDb, Buccaneers was shot on 16mm film. In America, most TV shows are shot on standard 35mm, 16mm film being passe usually for cheaper productions, especially sitcoms and series whose future is in doubt. The BBC alas is publicly funded and doesn’t have quite the deep pockets of competing American studios, so many of even its major productions are on 16mm. The critically acclaimed “Brideshead Revisited” immediately springs to mind. For a 16mm film, this actually looks dazzling first-rate with strong, vibrant colours, rich blacks and unprejudiced a small amount of graininess which imparts a clear softness to the narrate, worthy what you would ask from a 16mm print. It actually looks better than “Brideshead” does on DVD. What is disturbing is the rather queer (1.50:1) aspect ratio presented here. (Yes, I actually popped it into the PC to measure it.) Buccaneers is, I have, supposed to be in 1.66:1 widescreen. The 1.50:1 aspect ratio means that it has either been cropped or it has had its mattes removed. Either intention, it has been modified. Because of the unique ratio it has to be letterboxed into a 4:3 frame. It may matter only to a handful of cinephiles or videophiles but I do wish video companies would buy more care in transferring their shows onto discs. Sound is in 2.0 Stereo and dialogue is always sure and certain.

Some substantial obsolete movies are a runt bit like spinach. They’re obliging for you, so you HAVE to study them, even though you’d really rather not.

This movie’s not like that. You launch watching dutifully, and within five minutes or so you’ve forgotten that it’s a quiet movie. It’s an adventure tale corpulent of narrow escapes, and a war movie with Civil War battle sequences that remain some of the most authentic ever filmed to this day. During the locomotive tear, I’m continually tempted to scream advice to the characters on the conceal. (Okay, you probably don’t want to gape a movie with me.)

The General is a comedy throughout, but the laughs don’t detract a bit from the adventure. There are long tracking shots that would develop Steven Spielberg jealous. There are no computer-generated special effects, but there are stunts that smooth build audiences gasp — including one you’re not likely ever to forget.

Several years ago, Kino Video released this on DVD as fragment of the Art of Buster Keaton collection, with a musical pick up by Robert Israel. I’ve held onto a 20-year-old laser disc version from Thames Television because I take that version’s salvage by Carl Davis. It appears that this blu-ray edition will offer both scores, plus a theatre organ regain by Lee Erwin.

(I write this review without yet having seen the staunch blu-ray disc. It’s the astronomical, expansive movie itself that I want to recommend.)

you should change your description of The General. Johnny Grey (buster) is NOT ‘rejected as unfit’ in this movie. They don’t let him into the confederate army because they deem he is more primary to the South as an Engineer.

This had received very petite press in the US distribution market so I was intrigued to look how a French scifi/near future film might fare. And by the time the demolish credits rolled (to some nice rock/classical themes), I was impressed and surprised this had not reached a larger market.

A futuristic legend of US and Euro security groups working together to confiscate a memory manipulation procedure before it falls into the noxious hands. The epic is told through two undetermined groups of people that have mysterious backgrounds and unknown motives, one in the Paris law enforcement and the other in an unnamed medical facility (reminiscent of a THX1138 kind of color method and feel) . There is plenty of suspense, competent gun play, well choreographed hand-to-hand fighting, slo-mo camera work, pleasant music, awesome 3D holographic imaging, intrigue as to what is really happening, situation twists and memory loss to go around.

I opinion the cast acted quite well, and for the amount of material covered in this fraction, played adequately against what could have been a mighty longer film (and I would not have complained as there are several aspects that could have aged more shroud time) . You will eye some faces from other more known films like Babylon AD, Irreversible and Carnivale, but I felt the ensemble here was well do together.

The quality of the DVD came across nicely (from a BD to a sizable plasma) and the sound was mixed best when the music would play in the slo-mo sequences. The DVD docu is 25 minutes long, competently set together and covers all aspects of the production with this relatively unknown director.

Overall, a ample film on a solid DVD with friendly special effects and futuristic visions. Wish this could have gotten a larger release.

A sleek and sophisticated Science Fiction film with a astonishing mix of style, brains, and action-adventure.

This is a French film with subtitles but will appeal to any American fan of brilliant Science Fiction or action movies.

In a near-future Paris, a film-noir-style detective looks for vengance on the man who killed his partner and ends up finding something powerful more though-provoking. To vow more would be to destroy the fun, but I will say that fans of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse TV indicate may guess fragment of what is coming.

The myth is as shining as the best Cinema Science Fiction and engages the mind as well as the nerve endings.

The special effects are classy and stylish and recent.

But the coolest thing about this movie are the scenes of hand-to-hand combat. It is bone-crunchingly great. Most kung-fu action scenes are as grand a dance as anything, with two (or more) smallish guys doing creative moves. This movie shows precise, strong, adult, MEN, pounding on one another, trying to demolish each other with martial arts. AWESOME!

The two young men accompanying Sara can be seen as reincarnations of the serious and careful Isak Borg and the more carefree and dauntless Sigfrid. It is as though his life has returned to him as a theater in which the characters resemble those of his past; yet we are not obvious in realizing whether the resemblance properly belongs in the conventional man’s mind or is a synchronicity of time returned.

Memorable is Ingrid Thulin who plays Mariana, the wife of Borg’s son who accompanies him on the auto trudge to Lund. She begins with frank bitterness toward the stale man but ends with cherish for him; and again we are emotionally moved at the transformation. What Bergman does so very well in this film is to build us experience forgiveness and the transformation of the human spirit from the negative emotions of jealousy and a wintry indifference that is terminate to detest, to the redemption that comes with esteem and a renewal of the human spirit. Of the 3 adaptations produced by ITV in 2007, Northanger Abbey was the best (or the least awful to be unprejudiced) . I have received the DVD now and I look to my disappointment, arouse and outrage that PBS is cheating its public by selling a slit version of the adaptation. PBS had acknowleged it was going to broadcast a carve version, but it had also promised that the paunchy and complete version would be in the DVD, and that is NOT right. They are selling the nick version only. So beware, do not order this DVD unless you want only an incomplete version. Furthermore, it is advertised as close-captioned, and that is not good, there are no subtitles nor halt caption in this DVD

This version of Jane Austen’s unusual “Northanger Abbey” is determined to be a crowd-pleaser. I’ve seen 3 out of the 4 novel adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels (”Sense & Sensibility” will not be broadcast in the UK/US until Jan. 08), and this is - in my thought - the very best of them all.

What the early 80’s version of “Northanger Abbey” (starring Peter Firth and Katherine Schlesinger) lacked, this version more than makes up for. NA 07 (as it is fondly known among Janeites) stars newcomers Felicity Jones (Servants), JJ Feild (Nicholas Nickleby, Ruby in the Smoke), William Beck (Robin Hood) and Carey Mulligan (Pride & Prejudice), and British tv and stage veterans Liam Cunningham, Sylvestra LeTouzel (’80s Mansfield Park) and Gerry O’Brien. Screenplay is by Andrew Davies, who also penned the well-loved and swoon-inducing period drama favorites Pride & Prejudice (1995), Daniel Deronda, Doctor Zhivago (2002 tv version), Middlemarch and Wives & Daughters. Proper British period drama fans do not need introduction to him or his work.

Those have read the books know the epic. For the novice, the memoir is as follows: young 17-year ancient Catherine Morland accompanies the wealthy Mr. and Mrs. Allen to Bath for her first introduction to Georgian society. She meets the charming Henry Tilney and gregarious John Thorpe who both vie for her attentions, and befriends John’s sister Isabella and Henry’s sister Eleanor. She meets General Tilney (Henry’s father), who mistakenly takes her for an heiress. After the whirlwind social life of Bath, she is invited by the Tilneys to their country estate, Northanger Abbey, where - due to the influence of her fondness for gothic novels - she thinks up some fanciful ideas about the General. She falls in appreciate with Henry, but her fancies and the General’s discovery of her family’s apt social standing land her in inconvenience and threaten to trip her and Henry apart.

This adaptation triumphs in many ways. Fans of the novels know Henry Tilney as one of the most memorable and well-loved of Jane Austen’s heroes. He is charming, outgoing and witty as Mr. Darcy is serious, proud and detached. Henry as played JJ Feild is aptly charming, resplendent and swoon-inducing. Young and naive Catherine is played perfectly by the savory, resplendent and talented Felicity Jones. JJ and Felicity have an undeniable chemistry that echoes through every scene that they allotment. They are - beyond a doubt - perfectly cast. Also well cast are the glowing Carey Mulligan as the ambitious, shallow Isabella and William Beck is perfectly sleazy as her brother John. Liam Cunningham adds a determined gravity to the role of the imperious General Tilney while Sylvestra Le Touzel and Julia Dearden are endearing and often droll as the flighty Mrs. Allen and maternal Mrs. Morland.

The screenplay blends romance, satire, humor and drama perfectly while quiet staying upright to Jane Austen’s unique. The costumes and production values are capable. The only things I could really fetch fault on was that I wish ITV had made this into a 2 or 3 hour miniseries (instead of only 1.5 hours) and that Bath was actually venerable for the Bath locations. Viewers like me who have actually been to Bath will be able to train the incompatibility. And there is certainly enough material in Ms. Austen’s new to warrant a longer running time.

Nevertheless, this is an first-rate period drama and is rightly one of the best Jane Austen adaptations since the 1995 versions of Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility (though I also admit a fondness for Pride & Prejudice 2005 & 1980, and Emma (with Gwyneth Paltrow) ) . Of the 3 unusual adaptations that will be shown in Masterpiece Theater in 2008, this is my celebrated. “Persuasion” comes next, and “Mansfield Park” comes last. Time will vow how the novel version of “Sense & Sensibility” will compare to these three. As it stands, however, “Northanger Abbey” is an absolute gem and a crowd-pleaser that is distinct to delight period drama fans. I trust that female (and some male) viewers will become a JJ Feild fans after they ogle this.

I am an American born Chinese, and I am very impressed by this exceptionally pretty production of “The Helpful Earth”. I am also not bothered by the casting of Caucasian actors, Paul Muni and Luise Rainer, in the lead roles. This was an expensive production for MGM. They understandably sought distinguished stars who could scheme audiences into movie theaters. Muni and Rainer were both Oscar winners with the name recognition and prestige that MGM needed to acquire this project viable.

I give mountainous credit to Thalberg and MGM for hiring a mostly Chinese cast and for bringing a record about Chinese peasants to the hide in the first region. In the 1930’s, the world was grand more provincial than it is today. It took courage for MGM to undertake such a project as “The Fine Earth”.

As it turned out, the studio’s foresight paid off because this movie achieved both considerable and accepted success when originally released.

The 1937 version of “The Proper Earth” most assuredly stands the test of time. As other reviewers have so eloquently expressed here, every aspect of this production is pleasant with emphasis on the skillful direction and special effects. The special effects in this movie are even more realistic than alot of the effects you peruse in today’s movies. Mercifully, they primitive Genuine locusts in the 1937 version of “The Generous Earth”. If “The Respectable Earth” were filmed today, “animatronic” locusts or computer generated images of locusts would be outmoded instead. Those generally are not as convincing as the genuine thing.

But what really sets this movie apart from other huge films are the quality of the two lead performances by Paul Muni and Luise Rainer. Muni’s character, Wang Lung, is a dreadful, unsophisticated farmer. Muni could have easily portrayed him as a caricatural “hick from the sticks” or as a bumbling ethnic stereotype. Instead, he gives the farmer depth and universality as a decent, hardworking man who has not had the advantages of education or disappear, but who wants to accomplish life better for his family. Wang Lung is basically a simple man, yet he is not simple-minded. Muni is able to snort the interested intelligence and drive beneath the farmer’s lack of worldly experience.

Luise Rainer is a revelation as the farmer’s wife, O-Lan. O-Lan’s level-headed strength, selflessness, and dignity are poignantly suggested by the gifted Miss Rainer whose slightest gestures, glances, or whispers can accomplish the audience feel tidal waves of empathy and emotion.

I only wish that more people were familiar with this shining and ethereally stunning actress. Miss Rainer’s performance as O-Lan seems to transcend acting and enter the realm of spiritualism. It’s truly one of the gigantic performances by any actor in any medium.

For that alone, you must gape this movie.

“The Superb Earth” must be considered a “milestone movie.” As yet, there is no DVD but one packed with out-takes about the making of this film would be especially welcome. There was no Oscar given for outstanding visual effects until 1939; otherwise, “The Friendly Earth” would have ‘taken home’ that award!

The pleasing Luise Ranier did gather “Best Actress” award. The 1937 movie was based on Pearl Buck’s unusual that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. Interest in “The Expedient Earth” was revived in Topple 2004 when it was selected for “Oprah’s Book Club”. Perhaps women’s rights advocates should also give it a boost?

The record is about China in the 1900s. A simple farmer, Wang Lung, is ‘given’ (by his father) the slave O-Lan, for his bride. I do not remember grand from childhood about this film, but I definitely do not steal Paul Muni having such a mouthful of teeth! (special effecrs?!) Luise Ranier had won an Oscar the previous year for her role in the “Ziegfield Follies” — what a dissimilarity! Here she is the completely docile, proper wife; as someone wrote, she was hotfoot to her husband in “eternal servitude.” And her devotion was betrayed. Partly through the machinations of “Uncle”. At every time of crisis in the record along comes (GROAN!) the crafty, manipulatve uncle (Walter Connolly) who whines & wheedles - - inserting humor (? ) into the script and at the same time destroying family amity.

From the Internet Movie Database are the prophetic words of ragged slave O-Lan: “When I go succor in that house, it will be with my son in my arms. I’ll have a red coat on him… and red flower trousers… and a hat with a gilded Buddha and tiger-faced shoes, and I’ll go into the kitchen where I spent my days as a slave and into the tremendous hall where the musty mistress sits with her pipe, and I’ll present myself and my son to all of them.” (Smiles, blissful)

Today’s movie-goers don’t seem to care about “good life” documentation in films, but animation couldn’t convince as the 1930s true-life locusts do! That tired word “awesome” truly fits this vintage film: the choking drought & famine, the aesthetic ‘condensed’ account of harvesting when they must survive the fury of a storm, and the horrible scenes of revolutionary uprisings.

If you aren’t determined whether to go with Humorous Book Guy “runt” packaging or standard, (and I’ve glimpse some retailers, perhaps anticipating the unpopularity of the fleshy “cramped” packaging, are selling it at a great discount over the standard packaging) here’s a slight secret:

The “miniature edition” packaging is slight more than a 3-D molded Funny Book Guy face attached with rubber-cement to the front of the standard edition packaging. That’s right–the standard packaging artwork is correct there underneath Amusing Book Guy’s stout face! You can EASILY peel the Droll Book Guy face off the front of the box without damaging either, and you now have the standard DVD packaging, which will fit on your DVD shelf, as well as a Droll Book Guy face that you can prove or toss in the trash.

By this point the series had settled into a too-comfortable format that this season exemplifies.

1. Hilarious first act that is soon left tedious by the steady status.

2. So-so second act that introduces the gratuitous guest yell and expands on the place.

3. Hit or miss third act that either veers completely away from the general station or takes the premise to an absurd level. Depending on the execution and one’s personal tastes, this makes the episode either decent or poor.

Individual episodes deviate from this at times, but for the most section they stick fairly religiously to it. Did I say the guest voices are gratuitous? The stories should not be primary mainly because of the guest roar. This season leads off with The Who episode (which the commentary reveals doesn’t feature the entire group, even as it existed then), a symbol of what’s to arrive.

That said, I detached give this 4 stars because of the mostly mammoth first acts, which this period of the explain elevates to an art do. The best ones have almost nothing to do with the direction of the rest of the episode but are loaded with titanic gags, like the swagger to the Festival of Books in “Insane Clown Poppy.”

Some of the third acts are vivid, too, like The Prisoner homage in “The Computer Wore Menace Shoes,” or the mob family gathering Homer & Krusty invade in “Insane Clown Poppy.”

What’s largely missing is the emotional core that was so memorable in the first several seasons. By this point many of the writers, directors, and producers who created and cared about these characters have all have long since moved on to other things. The commentaries compose magnificent definite that the 12th season staff objective like making Homer appear as dreary and foul as possible. “Homer vs. Dignity” is a particular outrageous point featuring Homer doing baby talk in a diaper and getting raped by a panda. When profitable emotional substance is called for, such as Krusty trying to do a relationship with his previously unknown daughter in “Insane Clown Poppy,” no feeling comes through at all. (Compare it to “Like Father, Like Clown,” where Krusty reconciles with his dad, or the kill of “Lisa’s Substitute” when Homer gets Lisa to laugh with him again.) In this specific case, share of the predicament is Drew Barrymore’s generic snort work completely fails to issue the emotion that’s racy for her. In general, though, it reveals that the producers generally seemed to hover through the year.

Still, there are some highlight episodes, like “Trilogy of Error,” and “HOMR,” and the annual “Treehouse of Awe” is a exiguous better than some previous years’ Halloween eps. Even the lesser episodes have huge moments. The animators’ commentaries are racy as they discuss and illustrate on cloak distinct aspects of drawing the reveal. The Laughable Book Guy’s highlight reel is fun to witness. There is unexcited plenty to relish, even if you maybe won’t devour it quite as often as the earlier seasons.
